Course Description:
This course will focus on the Common Core Math Standards for 7th grade students. These standards are based on the premise that an effective mathematics program balances three important components of mathematics – conceptual understanding (making sense of mathematics), procedural proficiency (skills, facts, and procedures), and problem solving and mathematical processes (using mathematics to reason, think, and apply mathematical knowledge). These standards make clear the importance of all three of these components, purposefully interwoven to support students’ development as increasingly sophisticated mathematical thinkers. The standards are written to support the development of students so that they know and understand mathematics.
The central themes in Grade 7 focus on four critical areas:
1. Developing understanding of and applying proportional relationships.
2. Developing understanding of operations with rational numbers and working with expressions and linear equations.
3. Solving problems involving scale drawings and informal geometric constructions; working with two- and three-dimensional shapes to solve problems involving area, surface area, and volume.
4. Drawing inferences about populations based on samples.
The standards are organized into the following areas:
For more detailed information on the Common Core math standards, please refer to:
http://www.k12.wa.us/CoreStandards/Mathematics/pubdocs/CCSSI_MathStandards.pdf
Required Materials:
Math workbook, Chromebook, pencils, protractor, ruler, and calculator
Curriculum:
We will be using the Illustrative Mathematics curriculum this year and will utilize both online and print resources.
Grade 7 student materials: im.kendallhunt.com/MS/students/2/index.html
Assignments:
Homework will be very minimal this year, but there will be days when activities or practice problems should be completed at home. It is very important that you complete these assignments so that you can be prepared for the next day's lesson.
Grading:
We will be using Standards Based Grading this year with the following scale:
4: Exceeds standard
3: Meets standard
2.5: Almost at standard
2: Progressing towards meeting standard
1: Beginning to understand standard
0: No evidence or insufficient evidence of understanding
Expectations:
As a 7th grader, it is your responsibility to come to class prepared and organized with your workbook and supplies. It is your responsibility to keep up with notes and assignments when you are absent. You can find more detailed information regarding the “Excused Absence” policy in the Student Handbook.
Class Notes:
Due to changes in technology available to teachers I now have the opportunity to take class notes on my iPad, via Educreations, while they are being projected on screen for my students to see. There are several advantages to this opportunity which include the ability to type my notes and recording my verbal explanations from class. These are then posted online for students who may want to listen to them again for better understanding or if they are absent for the day. To create an account to view the notes please visit my website and click on the link corresponding to your child’s class period.
Math Help:
I am available for one-on-one assistance in the morning, during lunch, and after school IF ARRANGEMENTS ARE MADE IN ADVANCE. I hope you will take advantage of these opportunities.
I am looking forward to a wonderful year. I hope this information gives you a good idea about what will be expected this year.
